Fibre-Based Materials Set to Dominate Food Packaging Market by 2045
Research by UPM Specialty Materials and Smithers forecasts that fibre-based materials will capture the largest share of the food packaging market by 2045, increasing from 37% to 42%. The study, which surveyed over 230 packaging professionals globally, highlights a strong preference for these materials, with 71% of respondents identifying them as the most sustainable option.
Technological advancements, particularly in barrier coatings, are driving this shift, enabling fibre to replace plastics in various food applications. The report anticipates a regulatory shift where sustainability will transition from a voluntary initiative to a mandatory requirement, with 71% of participants agreeing this change is likely. Additionally, 88% believe it will significantly impact packaging selection processes.
Extended Producer Responsibility programs and eco-modulation fees are expected to steer the industry towards high-performance, recyclable materials. Global recycling rates are projected to rise from 31% in 2030 to 37% by 2045, although landfilling and incineration will still play a role in waste management.
Regional differences are notable, with Europe expected to lead in recycling efficiency, while the U.S. and Asia-Pacific face unique regulatory challenges. Janne Varvemaa from UPM Specialty Materials emphasized the importance of supporting customers in adopting sustainable solutions that maintain functionality as the industry evolves.
