New Cellulose Films Offer Sustainable Alternative to Plastic in Food Packaging
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and LUT University have developed innovative fully cellulose-based films and coatings through the F3 – Films for Future project, aiming to replace plastic in food packaging while maintaining performance standards. These cellulose materials provide a biodegradable solution that meets stringent regulations, such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
The new technology processes cellulose as a polymer, yielding transparent films with mechanical and barrier properties comparable to traditional plastics. This advancement addresses the challenges posed by plastic films, which are difficult to recycle and contribute significantly to environmental pollution.
Ali Harlin, Research Professor at VTT, emphasized the importance of these materials in helping manufacturers comply with evolving regulatory requirements while ensuring product protection and shelf life. The F3 materials are designed to integrate seamlessly with existing converting technologies and recycling systems, avoiding the common trade-offs between functionality and end-of-life handling.
The project has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of producing cellulose-based films at pilot scale, showcasing potential for applications in dry food packaging and bakery products. The films exhibit oxygen barrier performance comparable to conventional plastics, while the coatings enhance recyclability in fibre-based systems.
Ville Leminen, Professor of Packaging Technology at LUT University, noted that the cellulose films and coatings have been validated for various packaging processes, indicating their future potential. The technology also supports multifunctional applications, including antimicrobial properties and environmentally responsive packaging.
As the project progresses towards commercial applications, the focus will be on scaling the technology and enhancing barrier performance under humid conditions. The collaboration among research organizations, industry partners, and funding bodies underscores the commitment to advancing sustainable packaging solutions.
The F3 project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), aims to bridge the gap between sustainability and functionality in packaging, paving the way for a greener future in the packaging industry.
