ENGEL Unveils World’s Largest Injection Moulding Machine for Sustainable Production
ENGEL has launched the duo 12000 US, the world’s largest injection moulding machine, designed to enhance the production of large-format components. This two-platen machine boasts a clamping force of 110,000 kN and is capable of producing parts with projected areas exceeding 2.5 m². By enabling the cost-efficient manufacturing of large components in a single step, ENGEL aims to reduce material usage and improve production logistics, ultimately enhancing the CO₂ footprint throughout the product lifecycle.
The duo 12000 US features two parallel injection units with screw diameters up to 210 mm, allowing for shot volumes of up to 65,000 cm³. This innovation supports the production of lightweight structures and facilitates the replacement of traditional materials like metal and concrete with plastics, thus promoting sustainability in various sectors, including mobility and infrastructure.
With dimensions of approximately 24 meters in length and 8.4 meters in height, the machine is among the largest industrial systems globally, weighing 551 tonnes. Despite its size, the machine’s modular design optimizes floor space, making it suitable for diverse manufacturing environments.
ENGEL’s extensive in-house manufacturing capabilities and modular system allow for rapid development tailored to specific customer needs. The company has a proven track record in producing large machines, having previously installed several systems with clamping forces of 74,400 kN.
The automotive industry is particularly poised to benefit from this technology, as demand for large structural components rises due to trends like electromobility and autonomous driving. Applications such as battery housings and underbody panels can now be produced more efficiently, contributing to reduced costs and improved vehicle safety.
In addition to automotive applications, ENGEL’s large machines are being utilized in technical injection moulding for infrastructure products, including transport containers for e-mobility batteries and large water tanks. These products not only meet regulatory requirements but also offer advantages over traditional materials, such as easier transport and installation.
With the duo 12000 US, ENGEL reinforces its leadership in injection moulding technology, paving the way for innovative, sustainable solutions in large-scale production. The company remains committed to advancing the capabilities of plastics processing and meeting the evolving demands of the market.
