Alternative Fibres: A Sustainable Shift in Packaging

As the demand for fibre-based packaging surges, the industry is urged to reconsider its reliance on virgin pulp. Ramona Shellard, sales director at WEPA Professional UK, highlights the potential of alternative and recycled fibres in transforming packaging sustainability.

The UK paper packaging market is projected to grow by 6.5% by 2030, driven by businesses’ shift away from plastic and their commitment to sustainability. However, this rising demand intensifies pressure on raw materials, particularly virgin pulp sourced from forests, which faces increasing scrutiny due to its environmental impact.

The production of virgin pulp contributes significantly to deforestation and biodiversity loss, accounting for 13-15% of total wood consumption globally. Additionally, the processing of virgin pulp is resource-intensive, requiring substantial water and energy, which exacerbates carbon emissions and strains ecosystems.

In response to these challenges, businesses are exploring alternative fibre sources. Innovations in hygiene paper, which utilize recycled inputs like Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) and non-wood virgin fibres, illustrate how alternative materials can support lower-impact production. For instance, OCC recovery promotes a closed-loop system, extending the lifecycle of packaging materials and reducing waste.

Non-wood virgin fibres, such as Miscanthus grass, offer a renewable alternative that can be cultivated on marginal land with minimal inputs, alleviating pressure on forests. These fibres can also be grown closer to end markets, potentially shortening supply chains and lowering transport emissions.

Despite the promising innovations, large-scale adoption of alternative fibres remains complex. The packaging industry is still largely structured around virgin pulp systems, and the infrastructure for collection and recovery of alternative fibres is still developing. This presents challenges for businesses aiming to integrate new fibre solutions while ensuring consistency in packaging quality.

Nonetheless, the demand for sustainable packaging is driving change. Unbleached brown packaging is gaining traction in retail and e-commerce, with consumers increasingly recognizing it as a symbol of sustainability rather than a compromise on quality.

The path forward involves rethinking fibre sourcing for a circular packaging future. By embracing alternative and recycled fibres, the packaging industry can reduce its dependence on virgin pulp, supporting a more sustainable and circular economy. The challenge now lies in how swiftly supply chains can adapt to incorporate these lower-impact materials at scale.
