VDMA Unveils PPWR-Compliant Packaging Innovations at Interpack 2026

At Interpack 2026, taking place from May 7 to 13 in Düsseldorf, the VDMA will present cutting-edge solutions aimed at fostering a sustainable and digitized packaging industry. Located in the Technology Lounge, Hall 4, Booth C54, the showcase will emphasize three pivotal themes: Smart Manufacturing, Innovative Materials, and Future Skills.

The Technology Lounge will feature packaging concepts that comply with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates new obligations for companies starting August 12, 2026. This regulation affects all packaging in the EU market, regardless of sector or material.

Among the innovations highlighted are:
– Fiber-based Packaging: Krones AG is exploring alternative materials for beverage containers, including pulp bottles. The Fraunhofer IVV has developed a novel joining technology, “Papure,” allowing for fully recyclable paper packaging without foreign materials, ensuring 100% seal integrity.
– Barrier Coatings: The institute also introduced deep-drawable barrier coatings that maintain product protection while being recyclable, utilizing recycled polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
– Digital Tools: Advanced digital tools for shelf life forecasting will aid manufacturers in optimizing product protection while minimizing plastic use. The VERA system will monitor energy and resource consumption, providing data for sustainability reports.
– Smart Packaging Solutions: The SmartID initiative combines digital product passports with tamper-proof technology, enhancing brand protection and supply chain transparency.

The event will also include educational workshops and a recycling trail, emphasizing the importance of a circular economy. Visitors are encouraged to engage with these innovative solutions and learn about the future of sustainable packaging.
