Valmet Unveils 3D Fiber Technology for Sustainable Food Packaging

Valmet has introduced its innovative Valmet 3D Fiber technology, enabling the production of lightweight, three-dimensional food packaging from cellulose fibres. This new process, developed in collaboration with Metsä Spring, is designed to enhance efficiency by facilitating the circulation of side streams and trim waste, thereby supporting a circular economy.

The Valmet 3D Fiber technology is positioned as a superior alternative to traditional wet moulded fibre, offering manufacturers the capability to create trays, plates, and various food packaging solutions. Juho Pyrrö, head of Valmet 3D Fiber, emphasized the technology’s unique fibre layering approach, which combines high production capacity with automation to meet the growing demand for moulded fibre packaging.

Petri Rasinmäki, executive vice president of Packaging and Paper at Valmet, noted that this technology not only helps customers capitalize on market opportunities but also aligns with Valmet’s commitment to continuous innovation and resource efficiency in the packaging sector.

In addition to the 3D Fiber technology, Valmet has launched the IQ Virtual Sensor, a software tool aimed at improving quality consistency in paper and board mills while reducing costs and energy consumption.

Meanwhile, Z1RO has developed its own moulded fibre packaging using lignocellulosic feedstocks, including agricultural residues and European bamboo, aiming to deliver both functional performance and a premium tactile experience. This trend reflects the industry’s broader shift towards sustainable materials and practices in food packaging.
