Clean Cups Project Achieves Breakthroughs in Compostable Coffee Capsule Development

On June 12, 2026, a consortium of Dutch companies announced the successful completion of the Clean Cups project, which focused on creating a home-compostable coffee capsule compatible with Nespresso® systems. The initiative, supported by the EFRO East Netherlands programme, involved M-Plastics B.V., Hemcell Resins B.V., and Euro-Caps B.V.

The project’s primary goal was to develop a sustainable alternative to traditional coffee capsules, addressing the increasing demand for circular materials. Throughout the project, the consortium produced functional prototypes from innovative raw materials that met essential technical requirements, including puncturability, sealing performance, and effective coffee extraction in standard single-serve machines.

Significantly, extensive testing confirmed the feasibility of large-scale production using CCM technology, marking a critical advancement toward industrial implementation. The Clean Cups project not only yielded functional prototypes but also provided valuable insights into compostable materials and circular packaging solutions, laying the groundwork for future innovations in the sector.

However, as market and regulatory conditions evolved, the consortium decided against the commercialization of the developed coffee capsule at this time. They emphasized that while technical feasibility is crucial, successful market introduction also depends on economic viability and favorable market conditions. The partners remain committed to advancing sustainable materials and innovative manufacturing processes, keeping the door open for potential commercialization should the regulatory landscape improve.
