A recent study by UPM Specialty Materials and Smithers predicts that fibre-based food packaging will become the predominant choice in sustainable packaging by 2045. The research, which involved over 230 industry professionals, indicates that the market share of fibre-based packaging is expected to increase from 37% to 42% over the next two decades.

Key drivers of this shift include advancements in barrier technology, stricter global regulations, and a growing consumer preference for alternatives to single-use plastics. Notably, 71% of survey participants believe fibre-based packaging will be viewed as the most sustainable option due to these technological innovations that allow it to compete with plastic.

Janne Varvemaa, Director of Products and Technology at UPM Specialty Materials, emphasized the importance of supporting customers in this transition, highlighting that sustainability is becoming a regulatory requirement rather than just a marketing strategy. The study suggests that 71% of respondents anticipate regulatory changes will significantly influence packaging choices, with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and eco-modulation fees emerging as key factors in material selection.

While recycling rates are projected to rise from 31% in 2030 to 37% by 2045, challenges remain, particularly in regions like the US and Asia-Pacific, where infrastructure and regulations differ. Ciaran Little, Vice President at Smithers, noted that the industry is focused on improving recycling rates and adapting to new regulations that will shape material choices.

The full report, titled ‘Sustainable Food Packaging to 2045’, provides comprehensive insights into these trends and the future of food packaging.
