Amcor Study Reveals Consumer Preference for Recyclable Nut Packaging
A recent study by Amcor, a leader in responsible packaging solutions, has revealed significant consumer preferences regarding nut packaging. Conducted across Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK, the survey of 2,041 nut purchasers highlighted that 62% of respondents would be more inclined to buy nut products if they were packaged in recyclable materials. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger consumers aged 18-35, with 70% in the UK and 67% in Spain expressing this preference.
The study identified taste and flavor (23%) as the primary factor influencing nut purchasing decisions, followed closely by price (20%) and health or nutritional value (17%). Notably, 60% of participants indicated that packaging containing recycled content would also enhance their likelihood of purchase, with 69% in the UK supporting this claim.
Sustainability claims are becoming increasingly influential, with 20% of consumers citing recyclable packaging as the most compelling sustainability factor. Furthermore, 62% of respondents indicated a willingness to pay at least 3% more for products featuring recyclable packaging.
This consumer shift is being driven not only by preferences but also by regulatory changes, including the UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees set to take effect in 2026 and the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR), which mandate that most packaging be designed for recycling by 2030.
Sarah Neerkorn, Market Insights Manager at Amcor, stated, “Sustainability can directly shape preference and behavior at the checkout. With consumers facing more choices than ever, sustainability factors are becoming significant influencers on nut choices.” In response to this trend, Amcor has developed the AmPrima® mono-material solutions, designed to be recycle-ready in most European countries, ensuring compliance with upcoming regulations.
