Dow and RDM Group Launch Recycled Food Packaging Solution
Dow and RDM Group have introduced Multiboard CirculaRR, a new food packaging solution aimed at enhancing circularity in the food industry. Developed at RDM Group’s Fiskeby facility in Sweden, this innovative product is tailored for food-contact applications, including frozen fish, cakes, fruit trays, and dry pet food.
The collaboration merges RDM Group’s expertise in fiber-based packaging with Dow’s advancements in circular polymers and recycling technologies. Multiboard CirculaRR is made entirely from recycled materials, combining recycled paper with a coating of advanced recycled polyethylene, ensuring that functional performance remains intact.
With a 5% polyethylene coating, the new material is compatible with standard mixed paper recycling systems, promoting ease of recycling. The sustainability of this product is supported by industry certifications, including ISCC PLUS for the plastic component and verification for food safety by the independent testing institute ISEGA. Additionally, the 4evergreen alliance has assessed the product independently.
Krzysztof Krajewski, Chief Sustainability and Innovation Officer at RDM Group, emphasized the importance of collaboration in the packaging sector, stating that the partnership with Dow aims to break down barriers between paper and plastic, fostering a unified approach to recycling and circularity.
This launch comes as the industry gears up for the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which requires all packaging in the EU market to be recyclable by 2030. Dow and RDM Group assert that Multiboard CirculaRR positions brands and converters to meet these regulatory goals by utilizing advanced recycling methods to transform plastic waste into high-performance materials comparable to virgin quality.
Multiboard CirculaRR will be showcased at the upcoming interpack trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany, in May.
