Charter Next Generation Joins US Flexible Film Initiative to Enhance Recycling Solutions
Charter Next Generation (CNG), a prominent provider of sustainable material science solutions, has announced its membership in the US Flexible Film Initiative (USFFI) as an associate member. This marks CNG as the second non-consumer packaged goods (CPG) company to join the initiative, which aims to create scalable recycling solutions for flexible films in the United States.
The USFFI is a nonprofit organization comprising leading brands dedicated to demonstrating the recyclability of flexible packaging, including bags, wraps, and pouches, when supported by adequate economic incentives and infrastructure. CNG’s involvement aligns with its commitment to advancing sustainable material solutions and enhancing circular pathways for flexible films.
As part of its membership, CNG will contribute expertise in sustainable film design and collaborate with USFFI to improve material recovery systems and domestic markets for recycled films. The company’s GreenArrow™ sustainable film portfolio emphasizes recycle-ready materials and increased post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, assisting clients in meeting evolving sustainability and regulatory requirements.
Emerging regulations, such as California’s SB 343 and SB 54, are driving the need for progress in recycling practices. These laws mandate that materials must have curbside recycling access for at least 60% of Californians to be deemed recyclable and set specific targets for recyclable or compostable packaging by 2028. USFFI is prioritizing efforts in California by funding material recovery facilities (MRFs) to address economic gaps and promote effective recycling solutions.
Kristin Edie, Director of Sustainability and Regulatory at CNG, emphasized the urgency of meeting future curbside recycling requirements, stating, “Economic barriers and limited end markets have long challenged film recycling. By combining our expertise in sustainable film design with USFFI, CNG is committed to helping make flexible films a practical, scalable part of the circular economy.”
