Carrefour Belgium and CCEP Launch Sustainable Business Plan to Reduce Carbon Footprint
Carrefour Belgium and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) have initiated a Sustainable Linked Business Plan aimed at significantly reducing their carbon footprint and enhancing sustainable packaging practices by 2030. This agreement, part of Carrefour’s Act For Food initiative, reinforces the companies’ ongoing partnership by integrating climate action into their commercial strategies.
Since 2023, Carrefour has been urging its top 100 suppliers to meet a 1.5-degree global warming target, with a goal of reducing indirect emissions by 29% by 2030, relative to 2019 levels. The new collaboration with CCEP further commits to these sustainability objectives by targeting shared emissions reductions.
Key areas of focus for sustainable packaging include the introduction of a lighter one-litre returnable glass bottle in Belgium, which will reduce carbon emissions during production and transport. Both companies will promote the use of returnable glass bottles and explore innovative packaging formats, such as cardboard six-packs for smaller bottles, to enhance visibility and encourage reuse.
Starting in 2027, CCEP plans to increase the proportion of recycled materials in its aluminium cans and glass bottle return bins, contributing to a significant decrease in its carbon footprint.
These initiatives align with existing sustainability strategies, as Carrefour’s Act for Food programme has already achieved 98% recyclability for its own-brand packaging by 2023. Meanwhile, CCEP’s This is Forward plan emphasizes a sustainable value chain, with nearly 85% of Coca-Cola products consumed in Belgium being produced locally. The returnable glass bottle system in Belgium operates on a fully local cycle, allowing each bottle to be reused up to 25 times.
