Amcor, Mondini, and Metsä Collaborate to Advance Sustainable Fibre-Based Packaging
Amcor, Mondini, and Metsä have formed a strategic partnership to promote the adoption of recyclable fibre-based packaging in the food sector. This collaboration leverages Metsä’s high-quality paperboard, Mondini’s tray-forming and sealing technology, and Amcor’s barrier-lidding capabilities to provide food manufacturers with a comprehensive alternative to traditional plastic trays.
The initiative aims to deliver a scalable, commercially viable fibre-based tray system that meets the performance requirements for fresh and chilled food products while supporting the industry’s transition to lower-impact packaging solutions. Metsä’s renewable paperboard serves as a recyclable base, while Amcor’s lidding films are designed for compatibility with fibre recycling streams. Mondini’s sealing technology ensures that the tray and lidding function cohesively, providing the necessary seal integrity and product protection for various food categories, including meat, fish, ready meals, and plant-based options.
This collaboration addresses a significant barrier to the adoption of fibre-based trays by allowing manufacturers to utilize existing Mondini tray-sealing lines, thus avoiding major equipment changes and minimizing capital expenditures. This is particularly beneficial for businesses facing stringent sustainability regulations and rising costs associated with extended producer responsibility.
The partnership also streamlines the supply chain, enabling manufacturers to access a unified system from three established industry leaders, thereby reducing technical complexities and accelerating the shift to fibre-first packaging formats. The natural aesthetics of fibre-based trays cater to consumer preferences for sustainable packaging, enhancing brand visibility on retail shelves.
The collaboration signifies a broader trend towards system-level innovation in the packaging industry, where material science, machinery, and packaging performance are developed in tandem. As the demand for recyclable packaging continues to grow, this partnership positions fibre-based trays as a viable mainstream option, moving beyond niche solutions.
The new packaging solution will be showcased at Interpack in the G. Mondini booth (Hall 5 / Booth F24), featuring the G. Mondini Trave Streamline packaging system, which enhances production efficiency by reducing friction during the sealing process. Additionally, G. Mondini’s digital printing capabilities allow for direct customization of fibre trays, enabling strong brand differentiation while maintaining a natural look.
