UPM Specialty Materials and Paramelt have unveiled a new bio-based paper food packaging concept designed to enhance grease protection and improve end-of-life performance, particularly for bakery, fast food, and convenience food applications.

The innovative packaging solution combines UPM’s barrier base papers with Paramelt’s bio-based heat-seal and barrier technology, resulting in a recyclable option that meets the necessary grease barrier and sealing requirements for food products. Each component has been validated as home compostable, aligning with sustainability goals.

This packaging utilizes UPM Solide Lucent or UPM Prego papers, engineered specifically for barrier coatings, paired with Paramelt’s Aquavate Bio SB 2383, a water-based coating made entirely from biodegradable materials. The solution is suitable for various food items, including bakery products and grab-and-go options.

UPM emphasizes that the partnership showcases the efficient integration of the coating with its specially engineered papers, allowing for low coat weights and reliable performance on existing packaging lines, such as vertical form fill seal (VFFS) systems.

Samples of this new packaging will be showcased at Interpack 2026, located at UPM Specialty Materials’ stand in Hall 8A, Stand 29, and Paramelt’s stand in Hall 7, A02B.

In related developments, SmartSolve recently introduced PureNil 0, a 100% bio-based and flushable packaging substrate aimed at replacing single-use plastics in consumer goods. Additionally, BioPak and Everest have collaborated to launch FSC-certified paper ice cream cups and birchwood spoons, further emphasizing the trend towards sustainable packaging solutions.
