Squire, the UK’s oldest padlock manufacturer, has announced significant strides in reducing plastic waste through a revamped packaging strategy. In 2025, the company imported only 857kg of plastic packaging, a 75% decrease from 3,364kg in 2024, reflecting a shift towards more sustainable procurement practices.

The company has phased out plastic-heavy packaging formats, replacing blister packs with boxed and carded alternatives wherever feasible. This transition has resulted in a substantial reduction in plastic usage across its product range. Squire is collaborating with manufacturing partners to ensure that packaging materials are recyclable and comply with UK sustainability guidelines.

Retail partners have responded positively to these changes, appreciating the move towards sustainable packaging that aligns with consumer expectations. Squire’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its design decisions, which prioritize environmental responsibility while maintaining product integrity and retail compliance.

These efforts align with the UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility framework, which holds manufacturers accountable for the environmental impact of their packaging. By minimizing plastic use and enhancing recyclability, Squire aims to meet current regulatory requirements and contribute to improved packaging sustainability in the UK.

Squire’s sustainability journey encompasses a broader commitment to reducing environmental impact across its operations. Certified to ISO 14001 since 2010, the company is engaged in ongoing initiatives focused on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and responsible material use. The recent packaging changes are part of a series of practical steps, including investments in renewable energy and responsible manufacturing practices.

Terry White, National Field Sales Manager at Squire, stated, “Reducing plastic and improving the sustainability of our packaging is a key focus for Squire. The feedback we’ve received has been extremely encouraging as we work closely with our supply partners to lessen our environmental impact while supporting our retail customers.”

Squire remains dedicated to continuously reviewing and enhancing its packaging practices as part of its long-term sustainability strategy.
