Siegwerk Launches Cirkit Oxybar White to Transform Flexible Packaging
Siegwerk, a global leader in printing inks and coatings, has introduced Cirkit Oxybar White, a groundbreaking dual-function technology that combines an oxygen barrier with premium white ink in a single printable layer. This innovation aims to simplify the production process for flexible packaging producers and converters by eliminating the need for complex, multi-layer materials traditionally used to extend the shelf life of oxygen-sensitive products.
Historically, maintaining product freshness required intricate laminates made from specialized materials like ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and aluminum foil, which increased costs and processing times. Cirkit Oxybar White streamlines this by allowing both barrier protection and aesthetic printing to occur simultaneously in one inline pass using standard printing equipment. This not only reduces raw material usage but also enhances operational efficiency.
The new ink formulation provides a bright, high-opacity white base print with approximately 60% opacity, ensuring that premium retail packaging standards are met. Additionally, the ink’s visible laydown facilitates real-time quality control for press operators, allowing for immediate identification and correction of any irregularities, thus minimizing waste and ensuring consistent product protection.
In light of increasing regulatory demands for sustainable packaging solutions, Siegwerk’s innovation supports the transition to mono-material designs. By integrating oxygen and aroma protection into the printable layer, producers can replace multi-material laminates with recyclable mono-material polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) structures, as well as paper substrates.
