Ravenwood Packaging has partnered with Minor, Weir and Willis to enhance its Twin Pack Ready to Eat Avocados by replacing non-recyclable pre-printed flow wrap with a linerless fruit lid, utilizing the Nobac 5000L. This initiative aligns with the customer’s commitment to a ‘plastic-free’ strategy while improving shelf impact and product presentation.

The new linerless packaging format was chosen for its recyclability, reduced plastic usage, and potential to lower the carbon footprint. The project, which took approximately six months from concept to production, involved collaboration among various teams, including packaging, machinery, and commercial sectors. The printing was executed by Reflex Group, a UK-approved linerless printer.

While speed of production was not the primary goal, the new packaging has garnered positive feedback from both retailers and consumers, resulting in a notable increase in sales compared to the previous packaging. Although specific sales figures are confidential, the business reports this as one of the strongest trends observed in their product range.

Jan Rees, Ravenwood’s UK and Middle East Sales Manager, emphasized that this project showcases how sustainable packaging can enhance material efficiency while also refreshing product presentation and improving consumer engagement.

The success of the Twin Pack Avocado format is paving the way for broader implementation of linerless packaging across other fresh produce items, including passion fruit, mango, and sharon fruit, with additional products expected to follow soon. This initiative marks a significant advancement in sustainable packaging practices, merging innovation with a focus on consumer experience.
