Ollie, a dog food company, has teamed up with global packaging specialist Tosca to implement reusable packaging for its fresh pet food distribution. This collaboration aims to enhance product protection during transit, streamline operations, and significantly reduce packaging waste.

Tosca’s reusable plastic containers are designed to meet the specific needs of frozen, human-grade products, which require packaging that maintains integrity and supports airflow during freezing. Traditional corrugated packaging was found inadequate for these requirements, often leading to breakdowns and inefficiencies during transport.

Ed Brockhoff, Ollie’s supply chain and manufacturing director, noted that previous corrugated packaging created operational challenges and left room for improvement. The transition to Tosca’s reusable containers has resulted in better load stability and improved freezing outcomes. The new containers are collected, cleaned, and reused, thereby minimizing reliance on single-use packaging.

Since the switch in 2022, Ollie estimates it has saved the equivalent of 9,210 trees through this initiative. Michael Davis, Tosca’s customer success manager, emphasized the importance of providing high-growth food brands with not just packaging but also the necessary infrastructure to perform consistently at scale. This partnership reflects a broader trend in the food packaging industry towards sustainability and innovation, as companies seek to implement systems that reduce waste and enhance product safety.

In a related development, Tosca recently collaborated with Il Visone, a major supplier of fresh grapes in Italy, to provide reusable plastic crates designed with ventilation holes to ensure the freshness of grapes from August to November.
