Mondelez Unveils Recycled Flexible Packaging for Marabou Chocolate Bars

Mondelez International, in partnership with LyondellBasell (LYB), Amcor, and Taghleef Industries, has launched a new flexible packaging solution for its Marabou chocolate bars, utilizing innovative recycled materials. The packaging is made from LYB CirculenRevive polymers, which contain 100% attributed recycled content through an ISCC PLUS-certified mass balance approach, with 75% sourced from recycled materials.

Yvonne van der Laan, executive vice president at LYB, emphasized the collaboration’s significance in advancing circular solutions tailored to industry needs. The initiative aims to transform hard-to-recycle post-consumer mixed plastic waste into high-quality food packaging materials, supporting sustainable living.

LYB is also developing its MoReTec-1 facility in Wesseling, Germany, which will be the first commercial-scale catalytic chemical recycling plant for the company. Once operational, it is expected to produce 50,000 metric tons of feedstock annually, enhancing the supply of recycled polymers for Marabou packaging.

The collaboration highlights the importance of a unified approach across the value chain, with LYB providing circular polymers, Taghleef Industries producing the base film, and Amcor converting it into the final packaging solution. Richard Akkermans, Mondelez’s packaging sustainability manager, stated the company’s commitment to increasing recycled plastic use in packaging, reinforcing the message that plastic can be recycled and reused in new food packaging.

This initiative aligns with European recycling goals and prepares for upcoming recycled-content requirements under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The use of chemical recycling is seen as a viable solution to address the challenges of recycling flexible packaging waste into food-safe materials.
