Metsä Board, a prominent European producer of fresh fibre paperboards, has opened a new design studio in Milan on July 2, 2026, to address the evolving demands of packaging. As brands face increased pressure to minimize material use, transition away from fossil-based resources, and comply with stringent regulations, the studio aims to facilitate faster development of efficient packaging solutions that also deliver strong shelf impact.

The Milan location leverages a robust packaging ecosystem and a world-class design environment, fostering closer collaboration with customers across key European markets. Erja Hyrsky, SVP of Commercial Operations, emphasized the studio’s role in integrating design, material expertise, and data-driven insights to enhance the packaging development process.

By utilizing AI-supported design and simulation tools, the studio allows for earlier exploration and testing of packaging solutions, thereby reducing uncertainty and accelerating decision-making. Hyrsky noted that customers require validated solutions for real-world conditions at an unprecedented pace.

The studio promotes a co-creation model where design, materials, and performance are developed in parallel, enabling improved material efficiency without compromising on performance. Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director, highlighted the importance of this integrated approach, particularly for brands in sectors like food, pharmaceuticals, and beauty, where packaging is critical both functionally and commercially.

Metsä Board’s initiative reflects a broader trend in the packaging industry, where innovation and sustainability are increasingly intertwined to meet consumer and regulatory demands.
