The upcoming interpack trade fair, set for May 7-13, 2026, in Düsseldorf, will showcase advancements in sustainable food packaging, addressing critical industry challenges. The event emphasizes the need for maximum product protection with minimal material use, recyclability, and compliance with stringent hygiene and regulatory standards.

According to the UN Environment Programme, approximately 1.05 billion tonnes of food are wasted globally each year, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Interpack’s initiatives, such as SAVE FOOD, aim to raise awareness and promote solutions to reduce food loss throughout the supply chain.

Recent developments include the EU’s new packaging regulation (PPWR), which mandates reduced packaging waste and increased recycling quotas. A notable achievement is the certification of Europe’s first recycling plant for food-grade plastics, operated by Swedish Plastic Recycling, which processes PET and PS packaging with full traceability.

Material manufacturers are responding to these regulations by investing in certified recyclates. For instance, WIS Kunststoffe offers FDA-approved rPE and rPP materials for direct food contact, while Mopack’s eco+35 series features polyolefin films containing 35% chemically recycled content.

Innovative packaging designs are also emerging. GEA’s multi-chamber packaging for cold cuts reduces plastic use by over 70% compared to traditional options. Automation is increasingly vital, with companies like Ulma Packaging and Multivac developing systems that utilize recyclable materials and integrate AI for enhanced efficiency.

Robotics are playing a crucial role in food processing, with Stäubli Robotics and Ishida introducing automated solutions for weighing, sorting, and packaging, particularly in meat and poultry sectors.

Additionally, advancements in paper and fiber solutions are transforming packaging. Sappi Europe has developed recyclable high-barrier papers suitable for direct food contact, while UPM Specialty Papers is innovating with fiber-based barrier papers to replace aluminum laminates.

As the food packaging industry evolves, interpack 2026 will serve as a platform for showcasing sustainable solutions that prioritize food safety and environmental responsibility.
