ExxonMobil and Bandera Introduce Recyclable PE Packaging for Pet Food

ExxonMobil and Bandera have collaborated to develop a recyclable polyethylene (PE) packaging solution for pet food, addressing the growing demand for sustainable packaging options. This innovation utilizes PE as a mono-material, ensuring both recyclability and the necessary mechanical and optical properties for effective packaging.

ExxonMobil has launched its Signature Polymers brand, consolidating its polyolefin products to enhance collaboration across the value chain. The partnership with Bandera, a prominent extrusion equipment manufacturer, has led to the creation of a PE mono-material packaging solution specifically designed for recyclability.

One of the main challenges in packaging development is the implementation of machine direction oriented (MDO) PE films, which can offer improved mechanical and barrier properties. However, this technology often requires significant investment in specialized equipment. Instead, the new packaging solution employs a PE substrate film produced on a conventional Bandera blown film extrusion line, which is more cost-effective and easier to integrate into existing production processes.

The resulting film features high stiffness, excellent optical clarity, and dimensional stability at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for printing and lamination. Additionally, an EVOH-containing film produced on a Bandera Barrier Flex extrusion line serves as the sealing film, providing a wide sealing window and compatibility with ExxonMobil Signature Polymers Exxtra Seal.

This innovative approach allows for a viable alternative to PET in mono-material packaging, aligning with sustainability goals while maintaining high performance in packaging applications.
