DS Smith and Schneider Electric Launch Recyclable Packaging for Electrical Switchgear

DS Smith has partnered with Schneider Electric to develop a fully recyclable corrugated cardboard packaging solution for three integrated electrical switchgear products. This initiative aims to minimize material usage and enhance supply chain circularity.

The new packaging is designed to securely attach to the moving parts of large industrial switchgear cabinets, ensuring safe handling during production, transportation, and throughout the supply chain. It is compatible with automated production lines, facilitating efficient assembly.

Due to the heavy nature of the switchgear components, the packaging can only be moved from the side using an industrial manipulator. The design ensures that the components are securely positioned for safe transport, while also providing protection against potential damage during transit.

The packaging can be assembled in under a minute on advanced automated lines, requiring minimal folding. An openable side tray offers a stable base, allowing products to be firmly anchored for optimal protection. Additionally, a polyethylene bag safeguards greased elements from dust, while metal connectors are shielded by a folded corrugated cardboard insert.

DS Smith conducted drop tests to evaluate the packaging’s durability and safety, ensuring it withstands impacts and shocks during transportation. The compact design minimizes unused space, leading to reduced freight and storage costs.

Levente Szabó, cluster director at DS Smith Hungary, emphasized the importance of balancing protection, handling efficiency, and sustainability in packaging solutions for complex industrial products like electrical switchgear. He noted that the design showcases the potential of fiber-based and corrugated cardboard solutions.

This collaboration follows other recent advancements in the packaging sector, including Mondi’s development of a customized corrugated solution that reduced logistics and production costs for Argesim Teknoloji, and DS Smith’s partnership with SOMFY to replace polystyrene inserts with recyclable cardboard for roller shutter motors.
