Borro Expands Digital Deposit System for Reusable Cups Across Europe
Borro, a startup specializing in a digital deposit system for reusable cups, is set to expand its operations into the Netherlands, Germany, and France this summer after securing €1.3 million in funding from various investors.
The company’s innovative system connects reusable packaging to users’ bank cards, allowing customers to receive their deposit back automatically when they return a cup or container to designated smart collection points. This approach not only simplifies the reuse process for consumers but also aids event organizers in reducing waste, aligning with increasing European regulations promoting sustainability.
Currently, Borro has established its presence in Belgium, working with football clubs like Club Brugge and KV Mechelen, where millions of reusable cups have already been processed. The startup’s growth has garnered international interest, leading to its recent inclusion in PSG Labs, an innovation program by Paris Saint-Germain, with plans for implementation at the Parc des Princes stadium.
Co-founder Glenn Verhaege emphasized the company’s decision to avoid RFID technology, opting instead for a more straightforward and cost-effective solution utilizing invisible codes readable by cameras. This strategy has proven effective at scale, showcasing the potential for widespread adoption.
The funding round was backed by Seeder Fund, imec.istart, bluesnipe, PMV, and butterfly & elephant, the corporate venture capital arm of GS1 Germany, known for establishing global standards in the retail and FMCG sectors.
Co-founder Kasper Albers stated that the investment will be directed towards strengthening their team and accelerating growth across Europe, with the ambition of positioning Borro as the leading reference for digital deposit systems in the region.
