A recent study by Amcor has highlighted the significant impact of recyclable packaging on nut sales across Europe. The survey, which included 2,041 nut purchasers from Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK, found that 62% of respondents are more likely to buy nut products if they come in recyclable packaging. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger consumers aged 18-35, with 70% in the UK and 67% in Spain expressing a preference for such packaging.

The study further revealed that 60% of consumers would be more inclined to purchase nut products if the packaging contained recycled content, again peaking in the UK at 69%. Notably, 20% of participants identified recyclable packaging as the most influential sustainability claim affecting their purchasing decisions. Additionally, a significant portion of consumers—62%—indicated a willingness to pay at least 3% more for products packaged in recyclable materials.

This shift in consumer behavior is being driven not only by demand but also by regulatory changes. Starting in 2026, the UK will implement modulated Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees, while the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR) will mandate that most packaging, including food packaging, be designed for recycling by 2030.

Sarah Neerkorn, market insights manager at Amcor, emphasized the growing importance of sustainability in consumer choices, stating, “Beyond core factors such as price and taste, sustainability can directly shape preference and behaviour at the checkout. In a world where consumers have more choice than ever before, sustainability factors are becoming significant and powerful influencers on nut choices.”
