EU Regulations Propel Innovation in Compostable Packaging

The compostable packaging sector is gaining momentum, driven by new EU regulations mandating home compostable adhesive labels on fruits and vegetables by February 2028. This regulatory push is fostering innovation and reshaping end-of-life strategies for packaging materials.

Experts from leading companies such as Tipa, TotalEnergies Corbion, Brückner Maschinenbau, and Taghleef Industries shared insights into recent advancements in compostable technology. Tipa has developed a home compostable child-resistant zipper in collaboration with Presto, targeting nutraceutical and pharmaceutical markets where child safety is paramount. This innovation is complemented by ongoing work on adhesives that enhance compostability, allowing for more versatile packaging solutions.

TotalEnergies Corbion introduced Luminy polylactic acid (PLA), a bio-based foam material designed for protective packaging, particularly in single-serve coffee capsules. This material, derived from sugarcane, offers a low carbon footprint and is industrially compostable, addressing the recycling challenges associated with mixed-material coffee capsules.

Tipa also launched high-barrier compostable laminates, T-LAM-428 and T-LAM-418, which expand the applications of compostable substrates in sectors like snacks. These laminates achieve significant oxygen and water vapor transmission rates, essential for maintaining product freshness.

In North America, the push for home compostable formats is largely influenced by companies like PepsiCo, which are exploring these solutions to mitigate potential litigation over packaging waste. Brückner Maschinenbau is at the forefront of this movement, developing machinery that supports PLA and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) blends for home compostable films.

Taghleef Industries has also expanded its compostable offerings, aligning with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) to position compostability and recyclability as complementary end-of-life options. This dual approach aims to simplify packaging structures, enhancing both sustainability and recyclability.

As the market for compostable packaging evolves, companies are navigating varying regulatory landscapes and consumer demands, highlighting the importance of innovation in achieving sustainability goals.
